Véronique Terrieux: ASSEMBLAGES
It is with great pleasure that
YCG Fine Art
introduces
Assemblages, a meditative journey through time and space by Paris-based artist Véronique Terrieux. For this series, Terrieux began by collecting engravings of maps and architectural schemes dating from the 17th
to the 19th
centuries. Using these prints as a foundation, the artist has developed new creations in which her own ink paintings and drawings are embedded. At the heart of this process is reflection on the roles of continuity and disruption in the making of art—phenomena that have shaped different cultures throughout the world in profound ways.
Realizing works of art across time is an endeavor that depends on collective memory, as well as on the need to consider humanity’s place within the universe. The very media Terrieux has chosen for her mode of expression speak of ephemerality, of preservation, and also of connectivity, prints having the potential to disseminate ideas and compositions widely.
In choosing the works that serve as the supports for her Assemblages, the artist has tended to gravitate towards images that reveal a persistent human need to rationalize, explore and narrate—largely in response to all that feels immense, immeasurable, and elusive around us. On these foundations from the past, Terrieux continues to build through the introduction of her ink paintings—nebulous, at times positively dream-like inventions in which emerge suggestions of shadowy landscapes and otherworldly beings. The artist also often adds symbols and lines to her Assemblages, precisely calculated and meticulously drawn according to logarithmic principles, particularly the golden ratio, which over numerous centuries have linked the practices of numerous scientists, philosophers, and artists.
Terrieux’s Assemblages are grouped according to four themes related to their imagery and conceptual content. The first of these, REMAINS, examines how western imaginations have tended to confer a quasi-sacred status to traces of ancient civilizations, and what relationship nature entertains to these vestiges. The next theme, DISCOVERY, touches on the poetic significance of journeying, and the symbolic dimensions of the process of mapping. PLANS, the third theme, concentrates on architectural plans and their connection to mathematical schemes that exist in nature and space. The final theme, COSMOS, invites us into the realm of constellation and zodiac maps, and to consider some of the ways we negotiate our place in relation to the galactic realm.
I invite you now to venture into Terrieux’ Assemblages, and through this excursion, to discover worlds both distant and familiar, both reassuring and unnerving. These days, the question of humanity’s role in creation, destruction, and preservation, is of paramount importance; Terrieux’s visions offer a rich terrain in which to consider these issues and what we hope for our futures.

Véronique Terrieux
Paris-based artist and poet Véronique Terrieux grew up in Le Grézal in the countryside of Southwest France, the natural beauty of which made a deep impression on her.
After years of working in oil painting, Terrieux made the transition to ink on paper, often enhanced with colored pencil. For the artist, this medium has proven better suited to capturing her pictorial universe, in which reign silent, distilled landscapes evocative of the world in its original state and which provide the viewer with a contemplative escape. Terrieux has participated in numerous exhibitions and salons, including the yearly Salon International de L’Estampe et du Dessin with Galerie Grillon (Paris: Grand Palais, 2011–2017).
